"Why should I social dance?"

Students have asked time and time again why social dancing is good for them and how to go about it. We've compiled a list of our top 5 reasons why social dancing is not only fun but healthy!

1.) You become a MUCH better dancer through social dancing.

We know a lot of people are scared of the idea of dancing with strangers on the dance floor and not having their teacher there to tell them what to do and how to do it. Social dancing helps you learn what you're doing right and what you need to work on. Don't be intimidated. We all mess up when we social dance. It's a given. Mess ups are fine. No one expects you to be a perfect dancer. Social dancing helps you become a better lead/follow. It will help you take what you learned in class to the dance floor.

2.) It's so much fun!

Social dancing is a lot of FUN! You get to dance with tons of different people to tons of different songs. Don't focus on perfecting all of your moves. Go out there, have fun and laugh at your mistakes because they will happen. Mistakes teach us what we need to work on so we can grow. If you don't social dance then you won't know what you're doing correctly or what you need to work on and you won't allow yourself the opportunity to grow.

3.) You develop new friendships.

Dancing in general opens you up to a whole new social community. It helps you develop friendships especially if you are taking classes weekly because you see the same people on a regular basis. Social dancing however opens you up to a different side of dancing. Not everyone takes classes where you dance and not everyone takes the same classes as you because maybe your levels are different. Social dancing allows you to meet new people, develop new friendships and it really helps you become more comfortable in your skin. Once you develop these friendships, social dancing becomes even easier because you can dance with people you know, friends and classmates.

4.) It's good for your physical and mental health.

There are several studies on the positive effects of dancing.

  • burn calories/lose weight

  • tone muscles/strengthen body

  • Increase cognitive/motor skills

  • decreases chances of dimentia/alzheimer's disease

  • build confidence

  • stress relieve

5.) You will meet so many diverse people.

A lot of times people assume that Latin dancing is only for Latinos or that hispanics account for most of the dancers, but that's not true. People from all walks of the world know how to dance. You can meet people from North America, South America, Asia, Europe, etc. The Salsa community is one of the most diverse communities. Meeting people from different backgrounds exposes you to different dance styles, personalities and cultures. Overall dancing can make you a well-rounded person through your experiences dancing with different people.
